The ideal length of a business suit is something that is often overlooked by many people who wear suits.
To be frank, can you actually imagine so called “businessmen” of the past generation looking as if they have torsos longer then their legs! This goes out especially to the men who have long arms.
So What Causes the Suit Length to be too Long?
Most Common Reason:
Most tailors measure the length of a jacket by measuring your torso to the knuckle of your first thumb without giving a thought to the length of your torso. So if you have long arms, prepare to look like your wearing a trench coat and that is why professional tailors only use this as a reference but do not solely rely on it.

The ideal jacket suit length depends on your body type.
If you are tall, a normal jacket length that falls to the base of your thumb is ideal.
If you are somewhat of average size or short, then a shorter jacket length that spans somewhere along the ball of your thumb and not to the first knuckle.
To be safe, the jacket suit is preferred to proportional to the visible part of your pants that is pretty vague because we all weren’t created equal.

My rule of thumb is that your jacket suit is supposed to cover most of your butt and not all of it. This rule may vary because it really depends on your body type but if the length of your suit looks long that you have short legs, get it altered to have a nice balanced look.
The only problems with altering jackets that are too long is that it will reduce the size your pocket smaller but who puts a lot of stuff in their pockets?
I think the base of the thumb as said in this article is too short.
I would say that the length of your coat should drop somewhere halfway through the halfway point of your thumb.
